and they get switched up again!!

You thought I was done last time, right? WRONG!!!

I will admit this. It is a sickness for me. I will tweak things over and over until I get them JUST right. And I wasn’t feeling like the kids’ rooms were JUST right yet. Something about the layouts bothered me. The bed in the middle of the room didn’t work as well in this house compared to our last one. And I figured they may like more space to play in.

So I first decided to work on little man’s room because his was easiest. It was just being reshuffled and art being re-distributed. So one weekend, I pulled everything down, moved it all around and re-hung the art is small groupings that worked better.

And here is the result:

I love the map over his bed!

ART SOURCES: letter A from Dollar store; black frame – robot #1 and robot #2 from Holli Conger; small canvas – from Holli Conger; wood frame: art by little man; green canvas – painted by me; map from Walmart

He loves to read. I love to encourage it.

ART SOURCES: comic book art; collaborative art piece; painting by his cousin, “sweet as honey” card by Katie Daisy

And so far, he has kept it tidier than before. I think he likes how open the middle of the room is for playing and I like how neat it looks at the end of each day.

Now Little Miss has been asking me for a canopy bed for a while. Everytime she sees a canopy bed, she remarks on it and loves it. I had NO intention of buying her a new bed or building anything too complicated but figured there was a reasonably priced DIY way I could give her that feeling without investing too much time or money.

So first I headed over to pinterest and found great ideas like this. And this. And figured that the easiest way to get that same feeling was to hang a curtain rod simply from the ceiling above her bed and gather drapes to her headboard. This would also stop her from possible pulling on them and having any issue with them pulling down.

So while she was away for the weekend on a trip home with her dad, I got to work and ended up with this:

I love how soft the whole colour scheme now is.

For now.

I think.

Our house: office gallery wall

So as I mentioned last week, life has been busy. Hectic. Unorganized. So not much has gotten done around the house but I am trying to keep doing things that don’t take a lot of time or supplies. One of those things has to finally hang photos and art.

In my office I have a wall across from my desk that I stare at all day long and I decided to create a gallery wall full of images & objects that mean something to me or just that I like to look at.

And it is done!

my office gallery wall

I love my wall. It is random and pretty and makes me smile all day long.

Starting from the top left here is what it consists of:

  1. ‘be’ canvas – dollar store canvas and some paint. I printed the word off on my printer and used carbon paper to trace it on the canvas and just painted around it letting the white canvas show through. I made to remind me to just be myself and not worry what anyone else thinks about me.
  2. paper tole flower art – this was my husband’s grandmother’s. She had it hung in her house and we received it as a gift to remember her by. His aunt made it and I reframed it in a Ikea Ribba frame to bring it up to date. I love it!
  3. grateful print – by vol25.
  4. lanscape print on canvas – $5 from a flea market
  5. clock – $4 from walmart
  6. peace print (grey print in the black frame) – free printable from simple as that. I love this print because I had chosen ‘peace’ as my word of the year and this describes what I mean by that perfectly.
  7. skeleton key – found at a local country general store
  8. wooden letterpress ‘j’ – a gift from a friend. So happy to have it on my wall!
  9. mini canvas – a canvas I created using my grandmother’s handkerchief.
  10. dream – metal sign I purchased at a home show years ago. Was originally aged white paint and rust coloured so I painted it to go in here.

  11. Wizard of Oz poster – I have had this since I was in my teens. It is a mounted posted that was hung in my bedroom. It got placed in my office temporarily while we were dealing with our rec room carpet and I loved it. So it stayed.
  12. Photo of a rainbow – caught this gorgeous photo of a low lying rainbow in the back fields near our house. Took the picture with my iPhone and loved it.
  13. small print in gold frame – $5 at a flea market
  14. letter j – this was a cardboard letter from the dollar store and I covered it with some free printable paper with modge podge.
  15. a picture of me and a dolphin – a picture from a vacation I took where I got to meet (& kiss) a dolphin.
  16. Julia Child print – from unraveled design.

Up next? Painting the cabinets, organizing my files & making a note board.

finding art

I have been so busy with work these days, that I haven’t had a chance to do any fun projects around the house. I haven’t had any time to even blog (except today because I have a sick kidlet and therefore am not working but cuddling with child AND my laptop) That is ok though. I expected January and much of February to be this way. But the one thing I can still do is look for art.

I have always loved having inspirational quotes and words around my house. Sometime I think I am addicted to words. And now with the beauty of pinterest I am pinning so many great quotes and phrases. And often they are pretty to look at too.

So I have been following my pins back to the source and purchasing prints from other artists/designers to put up in my office and around the house. When I see something I like I can usually click on it a few times and get back to the source. Sometimes (like with the Julia Child quote) I have to really search and then contact the owner directly to see if they sell the print. But it is worth it.

The first two have arrived and one has been framed and hung.

Here is a couple sneak peaks of what I found (and bought):

I love this Julia Child quote!

Not sure where they will all hang yet but will show you when they are. :)
